Novel 193: Holme Lee, Ben Milner's Wooing (1876)

July 27, 2021 David Bywaters
Paul Maitland, The Flower Walk, Kensington Gardens

Paul Maitland, The Flower Walk, Kensington Gardens

Two men are rivals for the love of a virtuous young lady.

Holme Lee was the pseudonym of Harriet Parr (1828-1900), who published some thirty novels between 1854 and 1880.  This one is enjoyably brief and airy.

“A pleasant, bright little story.” Athenaeum, January 29, 1876

“A delightfully fresh rendering of the ‘old, old story.’” Spectator, February 2, 1876

“A charming picture, full of delicate touches and marks of close observation.” Saturday Review, February 12, 1876

“A very charming sketch.” Academy, February 19, 1876
